I’ve tried, for 2 years, to get some decent fall photos here in Utah… and never succeeded. So this year, I was determined to get at least one photo that I could be happy with. And thankfully, I did actually get something. In October, the week after the wedding, I went out on a drive and went up and down the canyons here in Utah. I ended up at the end of Big Cottonwood Canyon. Big Cottonwood is seriously one of the better canyons around here (that I’ve explored so far). So pretty. And big.

On October 1st, I had the most wonderful pleasure of shooting a wedding in Houston, Texas. Sarah is the sister of my best friend since 2nd grade. During school, I was actually over at their house more than I was at my own home. So they’re pretty much my second family. So much, that my mom said that if they claimed me on their insurance, they could adopt me. Haha. Thanks mom.

But yeah, the wedding was great. Beautiful location, beautiful wedding, and great company. Who could ask for it any better? Since I’m horrible at writing and talking… I’ll just post pictures, since that’s what I do.

Yesterday I wanted to get out and shoot something, since it had been a while since my last time. I was all pumped, ready to get out, capture some amazing photos, and just have an all around great time. I drove up the Mill Creek canyon located in about the middle of the Salt Lake Valley along the Wasatch Range (3800 South, to be exact). This is a small canyon, but as we all know… great things come in small packages, right? This is honestly one of the most beautiful canyons here in the Wasatch Mountains (that I’ve been in). Especially when you get half way up (you’ll pass a couple big gates), you notice the beauty. The road narrows, the vegetation thickens, and the temperature drops. It’s almost as if, when you pass through those gates, you’re driving into another part of the world.

After driving up and down the canyon a bit, I finally found a spot that looked good enough to stop and take some photos. I was still feeling great about all of this. Went to the stream, set up my shot, and started shooting away. It was awesome, despite me slipping into the water, several times. For some reason, those rocks were extremely slippery… more so than usual it seemed. So after shooting for about an hour (well, 30 min of shooting, 30 min of falling), I decided it was time for a new location. Packed everything up and started heading down the canyon. As I was driving down, I was looking around and up the mountain sides, and noticed quite a few trees were changing colors!! So exciting! Naturally, that just boosted my excitement by about ten fold. I was going to get my first fall shots, TODAY!!

So on a whim, I decided to head down to the Alpine Loop road that goes from the American Fork road down to the Provo Canyon road. Simply beautiful drive. If you’ve never done it, I highly highly recommend it. In the summer, it’s just amazing. In the fall… nothing can match it’s sheer beauty.

As I’m driving to the canyon, I start picturing all the amazing photos I’m going to capture. All the greens, yellows, reds, and oranges. An phenomenal combination of colors. One only nature can display in such awe. Well… I get down to Provo Canyon… with absolutely no photos. Yep, you guessed it. There were no autumn colors at all. At the most, there were probably just a handful of trees that had changed already. So, I guess I’ll just have to go down in a week or so. Hopefully we get a couple good cold nights so that they change.

When I get home, I’m still feeling pretty confident about the photos that I got from Millcreek Canyon earlier. I start transferring all the photos over to my computer, and can’t wait to look at them. As I open up Lightroom and import the photos… I can’t believe my eyes. No literally, I couldn’t believe my eyes. None of the images popped out at me. Did I really not capture one decent photograph?! What was going on? I was all pumped up, feeling like I was going to do great… and nothing?! Something can’t be right.

Often I find myself doing that. Feeling all excited about the photo adventure… and coming home with nothing like what I had imagined. Do I have too high of expectations? Do I judge myself too harshly? Both of those are correct. Let me show you why. Marc Adamus is my landscape photography hero. Every time I go out to shoot, I imagine his photos and want mine to look like his. But when I get home and see that mine don’t look anywhere near like his… I get disappointed. If you’re wondering why I feel this way, hop on over to his website and look at his gallery. They’re simply amazing. I can never get tired of looked at them.

Marc Adums

But, I guess all I can do is keep going at it. practice makes perfect, right? Another thing that I’ve thought about is maybe my gear isn’t holding up to my standards? So… starting today, I will officially be accepting donations towards my gear fund. Haha. You can donate via PayPal, or cash… I’m easy like that.

Anyways, enough typing, my hands are hurting. Here are the two photos that I got from my mis-adventure yesterday.

Yesterday, Wednesday, I took a drive up Little Cottonwood Canyon again… but this time I was making a stop at the Red Pine Trailhead. I was looking on Google Maps, in the Terrain view, and noticed two lakes nestled up in the Wasatch Mountains. One was named Red Pine Lake, the other, well the other wasn’t named. So I’m just going to call it Upper Red Pine Lake. If you have a problem with that… well too bad. Anywho, I then did a little research on the Red Pine trail and saw some pictures of the lake, and immediately decided I wanted to hike up there to get some shots. So, I did.

Looking towards Alta Ski Resort

The trail starts off with a nice gradual incline in a beautiful setting with Aspens and Conifer trees. But then it starts to increase in elevation gain, making the midday hike a lot warmer than one would like. Thankfully though, there are plenty of trees to give you sufficient shade from the sun.

Aspens giving some much needed shade.

Once you get about half way, 1.75 miles into the hike (the hike in is 3.5 miles… if you’re not good at math, like me), the trail starts to become… a lot less noticeable. At least it was for me. Maybe I’m just not as observant as I used to be, or just wasn’t paying attention… but I couldn’t, for the life of me, follow the trail. I would find it, but then loose it shortly after. Finally, I just decided to go cross-country and follow the river up the mountain side. Now, don’t get me wrong… I’m all for Treading-Lightly, but sometimes… it’s either needed, or just worth it… which was my case this time.

Looking down towards Little Cottonwood

While hiking cross-country I looked to my left and noticed a deer starring me down, daring me to come any closer than I already was. Then… I noticed there was two of them! One laying down. So, I figured the one standing was protecting the one laying down. But, what do I know? Haha. It was a little eerie though, they never, not once, took their eyes off me. They never actually moved, either. After using their statue-like stillness to my advantage and getting a couple shots of them… I went on my way, letting them relax I’m sure.

Watchful Eyes.

As I continued on my journey, I saw this…

Massive waterfall coming down the mountain.

Finally after finding the main trail, for the tenth time, I followed it for a little while which led me to Red Pine Lake. Red Pine Lake is a beautiful blue lake that sits 9,800 feet up in the Wasatch Mountains. The crisp clean air, the beautiful blue lake, and the peaceful stillness was more than I could ask for. Especially after killing myself hiking up the trail.

Red Pine Lake

But, since I had already hiked 3.5 miles… what’s another mile, right? I decided that I was going to hike up farther above the lake to see what was up there. Along the way, there was this nice little creek that helped feed Red Pine Lake. I was also surprised at how much snow was still up there. My guess is that the snow up there, never melts fully. There’s probably snow up there year round. Which I find strange, coming from Arizona.

Little Stream

Then, not too much farther up, at 10,000 feet up, there’s this little lake, Upper Red Pine Lake. The massive boulders that edge the lake were amazing. I couldn’t pick just one location to shoot from. I would go to one location that I thought would be an amazing scene, but then I would look to my left and see something that could be just a little bit better. So I would get all set up there… but then get bored and walk around some more… only to find yet another location that could push the envelope just a bit more. So, I would clean up “camp” and move to the new location. I probably did this about 5 times before finally settling down on this location…

Upper Red Pine Lake at Sunset

And I’m glad I stayed with this shot. I like how it came out. I was the only person up there… and actually almost the only (visible) living thing in the area. The only other living creatures that I saw, were birds. One kept flying in front of me, going from one side of the lake to the other. My guess is she was bringing food to her nest. Definitely a busy little bird. After this shot I cleaned everything up and headed back down the trail, in the dark. The hike down was mostly uneventful, besides the pain that came with hurrying down the trail. About half way down, I was greeted by a deep grunt/moan as I passed by. I kept telling myself it was just a deer/elk letting me know he was there. I didn’t really want to think about if it was something a bit more… carnivorous. Haha. Like a bear. But, I made it safely to my car just before 10pm. It was a great hike, amazingly beautiful. But it is definitely a one time thing for me.

Two weeks ago (yes, I know I”m way behind) I set off with a friend to go and photograph the wildflowers in the Albion Basin, since it’s famous for the wildflowers. Unfortunately, the gate was still closed when we went up (it’s open now, actually opened 3 days after we went up. Haha). So, we decided to go up Big Cottonwood Canyon, again. That canyon is just so versatile! Haha.

Pine Creek

While driving on the road towards Midway (passing Midway Reservoir, where I had photographed a week earlier), we saw this little dirt road shooting off of the main road, and since I now have a Jeep and can go anywhere I want… we took it! After maneuvering between two precariously placed boulders… we were on our way on a new adventure!

It's the little details that count

After driving on the little dirt road, barely big enough for the Jeep, we came across a fallen tree laying across the road. Not being able to drive over with (without causing damage to my vehicle) we decided to just stop there and explore the aspen groves that were in abundance there. Plus we heard rushing water somewhere, so we of course had to go and investigate.

Little white flower hanging on for dear life

Once we got to the creek, I couldn’t do anything but take in the beauty. The little creek running through tall blue wildflowers, with the stark white aspens… it was breathtaking. And needless to say, I was in heaven. I didn’t know where to shoot, or how to photograph it. It was one of those times when there’s just sooooo much to photograph, that there wasn’t anything to photograph. I hope that makes sense. It was like a sensory overload. But in this case, a photography overload.

Pine Creek, but Vertical!

Even though there was so much to photograph, I was still able to come away with a couple keepers. We probably spend a good hour and a half exploring the area. But I decided it was time to go as soon as I heard rustling in the trees/bushes behind us. Haha.

Thanks for reading!

A couple months ago I was extremely excited to get a 2001 Limited Jeep Grand Cherokee, to replace my falling apart Dodge Durango. Since my purchase, I have been driving anywhere and everywhere, wasting gas and exploring the mountains of Utah.

My Jeep: 2001 Limited Jeep Grand Cherokee

During my exploring, I have found some breathtaking views of the Wasatch mountains. Driven on some exciting off-road trails. And burned about 3 full tanks worth of gas. Haha. One of the first locations that I discovered was Midway Reservoir. I came upon this lake by complete accident, but I’m glad I did.

Midway Reservoir: Mist hanging along the edge.

One thing that was certain though… I definitely need some bug spray. The mosquitoes and gnats were unbelievable. It got so bad that I took an car air freshener and tried rubbing it all over my exposed skin, it seemed to do the trick, surprisingly. But I didn’t discover the makeshift bug repellent until I had already been out there for an hour, getting eaten alive.

Midway Reservoir at Sunset

Midway Reservoir just before sunset.

But over all, it was a great little trip. I drove the entire Big Cottonwood Canyon Rd, over the pass, down to Park City, down to Midway, then back up towards Big Cottonwood Canyon making one big loop. The drive from Midway to the Canyon was definitely a more scenic drive than the drive to Park City. Both were nice, but the Midway route was more scenic.

Well, I randomly decided to hike the Lake Blanche trail yesterday afternoon… and I’m kind of wishing I hadn’t. Once I got to the top, I was so tried and worn out I didn’t feel like taking any real pictures. Haha. But, forced myself to at least snap a few shots… just to see what I could come up with.

But then, all those lovely clouds everyone saw yesterday… decided to unleash their rage down upon me and completely soak me from head to toe. Normally, I love the rain and thunder/lightning. But… not when I’m at the top of the mountain carrying a bunch of expensive electronics. Haha. So, wasn’t one of my best hikes.

But, after looking at my shots (a grand total of 8), I decided that one of them would be decent enough to edit. So… here it is, in color and Black and White.

I hiked the Ghost Falls trail in corner canyon over the weekend. I had no idea that canyon even existed until a couple weeks ago when I found a trail map online.

It’s located down in Draper, Utah. The canyon is small, but has quite a few different trails that you can hike or bike. I chose Ghost Falls because of the waterfall.

The area is beautiful. Nice and green with lots of vegetation. I’ll definitely have to make a trip out there with my dSLR instead of just my cell camera, which actually does surprisingly well… as you can see for yourself.
